In the wee hours of the morning, I was driving home after a delightful evening with a group of singles from work. The summer sky sparkled with a bazillion stars, and the radio filled the car with Willie Nelson singing “Georgia on My Mind.” Life was good.
Then, out of the blue, a crazy thought hit me: Why not Marie?
Insanity. In less than two and a half years, Marie Petersen had risen from an entry-level editorial position to become the most valuable colleague in the company. We worked closely. We were friends. Only a complete idiot would risk messing that up.
Sanity returned. “Get that idea right out of your head,” I told myself. And I did.
Or so I thought.
Some seeds won’t go away. The following week, the same group went to the same bar. Marie was with us at first, but she was expecting to meet someone. While she waited, she asked if I’d like to dance. When Randy arrived, that would be my cue to quietly slip back to the group. I was fine with that.
But Randy didn’t show.
And as we danced, something shifted. We grew closer… our eyes met… lightning struck… and in that instant, we both knew our lives would never be the same.
That was nearly fifty years ago. Whether it was a small decision or a miracle, I’m still not sure.
But it certainly felt like divine intervention.
I love this story and these two people!
These two people love you.
