June 24, 1942 – August 28, 2021
Larry R. Clapper died peacefully on Saturday, August 28, after a short illness.
He is survived by wife Gretchen Vik, daughter Laurie Chamberlin, granddaughter Kate and grandson lan (Washington, D.C). and son Dave Clapper, grandsons Cameron and Zachary (Seattle), as well as his brother Lyle Clapper (Bentonville, Arkansas) and his sister Edie Marks (Fruita, Colorado).
He grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois, where his parents, John and Edna Clapper, published Pack-O-Fun magazine. He used his degrees from Purdue and Stanford in his work as a management consultant throughout his career. In San Diego, he was active in Rotary Club 33, especially Camp Enterprise, MIT Enterprise Forum, Corporate Finance Council, and other business groups. He loved driving his Miata in Autocross and attending Mainlv Mozart (since its founding in 1988), Symphony, Opera, and Old Globe performances, plus football, basketball, and baseball.
He was a loyal friend and a fun, handsome, and entertaining companion.
We miss his wordplay, his unerring sense of direction, and his Midwestern values! He was a truly good man who would be missed by many people.
Due to COVID concerns, a memorial service will be held later.
